Hello all!

With the wide release of Microsoft Vista, it has come to my attention that the security lockdowns that this operating system imposes on it's users is rather tedious, and over the top.

Rather infuriating, having to answer prompt after prompt of "are you sure", just to copy a simple file.

With Hurricane requiring you to write the "hurricane.scr" file into the AutoCAD/SUPPORT directory, (although Hurricane is compatible with VISTA), Vista tells Hurricane that the directory is "read-only", thus Hurricane throws an error (it's only reporting what the OS is telling it).

To correct this, one must set all permissions on the /SUPPORT/ directory wide open. or choose a directory that has open permissions, and make sure AutoCAD has that other directory listed in the "Support Files Search Path" (AutoCAD->Config->Files menu)

I will attempt to see how this can be done programmatically from within Hurricane, but I bet, because of the hightened level of paranoia by Microsoft OS designers, overriding these lockdown features will be very difficult, and in the process, piss-off an awful lot of people.

Having just purchased a laptop with VISTA pre-installed... I, for one, am considering ditching VISTA, reformatting and going back to XP.

More and more it seems upgrading is not what it's cut-out to be...

...but don't get me started...

Regards,
Bill

Everything I've heard about Vista so far leads me to believe that anyone interested in using their computer as a production tool is going to have to stick with XP until Microsoft bites the bullet and replaces Vista with something that actually works. I feel your pain, Bill. I can't imagine writing software compatible with such a piece of crap as Vista is reported to be.

To those of you with Vista,

Here are a couple of good articles on how to disable "UAC" (User Account Control) in Windows Vista.

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/

It will stop all the annoying confirmation boxes from asking you again and again if you know what you are doing.

Regards,
Bill

Oh... I thougth I'd visit this thread again... and announce that I've solved the Vista issues cold in their tracks.

I've wiped the drive and installed XP-SP2.

Boy, this baby is fast now... I can't believe how much overhead must have been going to waste doing other unnecessary things.

Peace!

I just got this brand new spankin hot Win7 machine, 64 bit, with AutoCad 2011, and I'm so freaking frustrated!
I've tride setting the UAC to the lowest setting and I still get promted:
****************************************************************
Hurricane Alert
Please confirm your Hurrican Batch Script OUTPUT path and file are NOT READ-ONLY.
******************************************************************
I finally stumbled across a setting in Security setting for the batch script target folder that lets the script writer work with UAC settings at the 2nd setting from the bottom. This is "Notify me only when proggrams try to make changes to my computer".

In my case, I created a folder at C:\HurricaneBatchScript

Select the folder properties, select the Security Tab, Select edit.
Now select Add to add more group permissions to the folder.
Another dialog box opens prompting you to select users or groups.
Select the Advanced tab at the bottom, this opens another dialog box that provides you a search to select users and groups. Click the Find Now button and a list is populated down below. Select BATCH.
Select OK to close this menu, now you will be brought back to the security permissions box for the folder. Highlight BATCH and check all the boxes under the permissions check box menu.
Select OK, close the dialog box, WALA! Hurricane generates a script file.
Ok, that part is working, but I'm still not fully functional.....
AutoCAD keeps prompting me it can't find the file "hurricane.scr".
I added the C:\HurricaneBatchScript to AutoCAD's search path but that doesn't seem to matter.
I'll keep plugging away....
Regards,
Greg D.

Hi Greg,

You might want to try to add a button to a toolbar in AutoCAD that tells it SPECIFICALLY which script to run.

(There is an example in the Hurricane/MENU/ subfolder... along with button bitmap...)

^C^C_script "c:/yourspecialpath/hurricane.scr"

(The forward slashes might be back-slashes... I'm just not near a machine to test it)

I've come to realize that "upgrade" usually doesn't necessarily mean "better".
